Science fiction and fantasy movies make up many of the largest box office blockbusters. Their production values have improved vastly over the awful dreck that Hollywood once foisted on an all-too-often willing audience.
The greatest science fiction and fantasy franchises of all time include:
Planet of the Apes The first “Planet of the Apes” movie starring Charlton Heston came out in 1968. Heston made one sequel but co-star Roddy McDowell went on to star in the four remaining movies. A short-lived television series followed, and McDowell, who had played 2 apes in the movie, played a 3rd one.
The franchise was revised in the 2000s, rebooted twice.
Star Wars The first Star Wars movie came out in 1977 and it dominated the summer box office. George Lucas went on to make two more movies before taking a 16 year hiatus. And then he made three more films starting with “Star Wars: Episode I, The Phantom Menace” in 1999. Since the last film, however, Lucas has sold his studio to the Disney Company.
Marvel Studios (also now owned by Disney) has masterminded the rollout of an unprecedented number of movies featuring superheros from Marvel comic books. “The Avengers” are the core group but “Guardians of the Galaxy” is also very popular.
